Take flight to Sustainable Adventure in Alaska
Reducing our footprint with carbon offsetting
Access the Alaskan Wilderness with a Commitment to Sustainability
At Wrangell Mountain Air, we’re privileged to share Alaska’s breathtaking glacial landscapes with our passengers. From towering peaks to untouched wilderness, these experiences are unforgettable. However, we are mindful of the environmental impact that comes with operating our aircraft.
To mitigate our carbon footprint, we actively support and contribute to carbon offset projects aimed at combating climate change. Our ultimate goal is to achieve carbon neutrality in our air operations, doing our part to ensure that future generations can continue to explore and cherish Wrangell St. Elias National Park just as we have.
We invite our passengers to join us in this mission. As part of our commitment, Wrangell Mountain Air matches passenger contributions toward carbon offset efforts—up to $1,500 annually. Together, we can help protect the Alaskan wilderness we all love.
Where do your contributions go?
We are proud to partner with Cool Effect, a highly respected nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. Combining scientific rigor, expertise, and complete transparency, Cool Effect identifies and supports projects worldwide that deliver measurable environmental benefits.
In 2023, we reached carbon neutrality for our air operations by offsetting 262 mt of carbon through Cool Effect’s project installing biodigesters in rural Indian homes. These innovative systems transform decaying organic waste into clean methane gas for cooking, replacing inefficient wood-burning stoves. This not only reduces harmful emissions but also improves indoor air quality and daily living conditions for families.
In 2024, we reached carbon neutrality for our air operations again offsetting 263 mt of carbon with the Manaus Landfill Gas (LFG) Recovery Project in Brazil, addressing methane emissions—one of the most potent short-term greenhouse gases, with a warming potential 80 times greater than CO₂. The project collects and processes landfill gas using advanced systems, including enclosed flares and biogas generators, to prevent methane release, improve air quality, and generate renewable energy. This initiative not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also creates jobs, enhances safety, and provides sustainable energy.
As a company that connects people with nature, we’re delighted to support initiatives that make a meaningful difference for both the planet and its people. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed this summer—you’ve helped fund a project that enhances lives and protects the environment.
What kind of projects are funded with my donation?
Your donations support a variety of impactful carbon credit projects designed to reduce emissions using widely accepted methodologies. These include providing clean cookstoves, preserving forests and grasslands, capturing methane from landfills, and implementing small-scale renewable energy initiatives. Each project is carefully vetted to ensure it effectively reduces greenhouse gases while benefiting local communities and ecosystems.
How can I participate?
You can buy in with us in one of three ways:
1. Click the box that reads “Offset the carbon footprint of your flight“ when reserving your flight online, and we will automatically add 0.5% of your total balance to your flight cost.
2. Add it to your flight transaction when checking out on the iPad in our office.
3. Put cash in the “carbon credit" jar - tip jar style. All of this money also makes its way to Cool Effect.
How much should I buy?
Offsetting your flight's carbon emissions is surprisingly affordable—just $1.75 per flight hour in our Cessna aircraft and $2.75 per flight hour in the DeHavilland Beaver. To amplify the impact, Wrangell Mountain Air matches passengers’ total contributions annually, up to $1,500. Join us this summer in striving for a carbon-neutral footprint in the sky!
Wrangell Mountain Air is a proud member of Adventure Green Alaska
At Wrangell Mountain Air, we are dedicated to living sustainably within the wilderness and supporting sustainable tourism. We do this by composting, recycling, considering packaging of our purchases, utilizing backhauls, using solar energy, donating to local nonprofits, educating visitors, hiring locals, reusing/repurposing used items, contributing to carbon offset projects and encouraging our partners to do the same. As of 2024, we are in the process of bringing the travel agents we work with on board with offsetting all of their flights booked with us! Check out Adventure Green Alaska and other tourism companies around the state who also have made commitments toward sustainable tourism.
